I actually think this program has to be some kind of a joke. The computer starts playing like a crappy chess AI and when it doesn´t have any way to save it's ass the king starts making illegal moves and taking your pieces like a heat seeking missile.

I came over this game again, and a couple of things are clear:

This is not at all a commercial grade program, it is an amateur program released into Public Domain. The game is originally written in BASIC ca 1980. This means it predates MS-DOS/PC-DOS, and was probably originally developed in BASIC on CP/M.

The PC-SIG library (a vast collection of PD and user supported programs) contains at least 5 different versions of this program, all of which appear to be some modification of the original BASIC program. Some modifications may be bugfixes or to enable it to run under different BASIC implementations, other simply added PRINT statements saying where the file was downloaded from. There's also different compiled EXEs, such as the one present here.

Plays a pretty crappy game, even for it's time. And it has a weird bug; When it gets a completely lost, it tends to make illegal king moves:

(level 24)

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nxe5 dxe4 4.Nc3 Qd4 5.Qh5 Be6 6.Nb5 Qd5 7.Nxc7+ Ke7 8.Nxd5+ Bxd5 9.d3 exd3 10.Bxd3 Bxg2 11.Qg5+ Nf6 12.Qxg2 Kd6 13.Nxf7+ Kc5 14.Be3+

Illegal move Ke6.

Kb4 is the only legal move, which would have been followed by 15.Qxb7+ and 16.Qb5#

Plenty of better options exist if you are interested in early 80s computer chess. Try Psion or MyChess for MS-DOS, or Sargon or Microchess for Apple II or the Commodore computers (PET, VIC20, C64).
