How to play Terminator: Salvation Windows

NoDVD for the game showed 6 warnings on VirusTotal check, it is common situation for NoCDs/NoDVDs, nothing to worry about. As alternative you can use mini-image to bypass disc check, it showed 0 warnings.

The game with NoDVD has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10, works okay. The game supports widescreen and ultra-high resolutions up to 4k. You may experience some troubles during the play, check our Notes

Install & play guide:

  • Mount the ISO disc image of DVD. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 102% or Daemon Tools Lite
  • Install the game (if it doesn't run - simply launch the installation from Setup.exe inside the disc, run it in compatibility mode with Windows XP).
  • Also it is recommended to install DirectX 9 from the disc (if you're using Windows 10 - enable DirectPlay, read this or this guide how to do it)
  • After that install NoDVD (simply copy TerminatorSalvation.exe from the archive and replace the original file inside the game folder) or use mini image to bypass disc check
  • Open the directory with the game and find TerminatorSalvation.exe. Right click on TerminatorSalvation.exe - Properties - Compatibility - Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP2" and "Run as administrator"
  • Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't work - try to launch the game, then open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del by default) and check for processes TerminatorSalvation.exe and rundll32.exe. Close TerminatorSalvation.exe but don't touch rundll32.exe (it's a Windows app for running old apps from 32-bit operational systems, most old games running through rundll32.exe). Now try to launch the game again, it must work. Don't forget to close rundll32.exe process in Task Manager after finishing playing

If the installer shows error -5006 : 0x80070002, do the next:

  1. Download InstallShield CAB editor (iscab.zip)
  2. Launch ISCabVu.exe and open data1.hdr in ISCabVu
  3. Select "View" - "Components" - Extract all files from folders grin exes, grin exesvistaonly, bundles, video, root, context (language you need)
  4. Create directory "Terminator Salvation" on your hard drive, then create folders bundles and data/videos inside that directory. Put the .bik files in the video folder, and the rest (except what was extracted from the root) in the bundles folder

Notes:

  • If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
  • NoDVD is required for the launch because the game is using SecuROM DRM protection, which doesn't work correctly on modern systems. That NoCD "breaks" DRM protection and allows the game to work on modern systems
  • It is highly recommended to install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for the correct work of the game, especially Visual C++ 2008 SP1
  • Also it is recommended to install RAD Video Tools and K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
  • The game is using OpenAL system, so if you see the error about "openal32.dll is missing" - install OpenAL or download openal32.dll from the Internet and put inside game directory (next to exe-file)
  • If you are having problems with the game not launching or loading endlessly - try to install PhysX drivers from the disc or PhysX Legacy drivers. The game was tested with PhysX drivers version 9.17.0524, it was working okay. If you have troubles with installing PhysX drivers - read this guide
  • The game works on DirectX 9, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
  • If you have graphical glitches on Nvidia graphics cards - try to change game settings through Nvidia Inspector
  • The game has English dubbing and text localizations on 10 languages, you can change the language of text by editing context.xml in game directory. Simply change "english" to the desired language and the game menu & subtitles will be on new language
  • Don't forget to check PCGamingWiki page if you have troubles

Similar to the movie it's based on, this game failed to make any significant impact. Personally, I don't have any issues with 'console shooters,' as there are plenty of games catering to hardcore shooter fans.

Essentially, it follows the same apocalyptic sci-fi theme as the movie. I enjoyed the shooting mechanics, perhaps because I was in the mood for some cover-based shooting after finishing a hardcore game. The story and characters take a back seat in favor of linear shooting gameplay. The music, like a Terminator movie, is suitably epic. However, the guns don't feel particularly impactful, as most enemies are bullet sponges.

Overall, I'm surprised by the level of polish in this game, considering it's already become abandonware. I'm grateful that you guys preserved it. Thanks.

I downloaded the el amigos repack but it contained an iso file. I thought the repacks were supposed to install from rar files? Anyways, the game installed ok and started up ok. I also found that you can mount iso directly with Windows now, you dont even need daemon tools or anything.

@CLB1966

Hey, CLB1966. I wanted to say - I tested this game myself on my old Windows 7 x64 laptop with AMD graphics and my Windows 10 PC with AMD RX 480.
About PhysX - you don't need to delete other versions of PhysX, you can install few versions on one system. On my laptop I have PhysX Legacy Driver and old PhysX (not Legacy) version 9.12.1013.
Plus when I was testing the game on Windows 10, I installed ElAmigos repack and PhysX version 9.17.0524, the game worked okay too.

So you can install several PhysX drivers and delete the non-necessary one after you finish playing the game.

I think maybe it is the problem with Visual C++ Redistributable, when I was adding the game I read many comments about it. I'd recommend you to try to install all Visual C++, especially Visual C++ 2008 SP1, you can find them here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170 (also, you can easily find online all-in-one packs which includes all versions in one installer)

Plus install OpenAL and K-Lite Codec Pack, maybe the problem is in audio/video codecs

Well, I can't get that to work on my Win7x64 gaming machine. Which is odd, because it used to work.

Turns out that the issue is with the fact that I have a newer version of PhysX than it expects (and unlike most other games, it won't accept the nVidia "legacy physx" version, either).

I know I'll eventually find a solution, but damn, I hate it when programs have "compatibility checks" before they allow themselves to even ATTEMPT to run.

The program worked just fine on this system, not all that long ago, but the version of PhysX it requires... DEMANDS, it seems... will break too many other games on my system.

So... until I figure out a fix (probably installing the old version of PhysX, extracted all the installation files for that, and dumping them right into the game directory, then uninstalling the old version and reinstalling the modern and "legacy" PhysX versions)... this game will remain "fallow" in my collection.

Which is sad, because all things considered, it's not a BAD game, exactly. Just not nearly as good as it ought to have been. The visuals, despite some critiques I've seen, are quite nice (though they really overdid the depth-of-field thing!), and the game world really does feel like the world we see in the movie (which, unfortunately, didn't feel like the world we'd seen in the earlier movies, but hey, would ANY humans have survived in the earlier-movies version?)

The gameplay is just "console gameplay," and feels a bit too much like being shepherded down a rail for my tastes. I prefer worlds where at least I FEEL like I've got some control over what's going on, even if, ultimately, there's only one valid path I can follow. "Consolitis" is the worst VALID criticism of this game I can think of. And the best games, even on consoles, don't necessarily suffer from that anymore... at least not as badly as this game did.

If you don't mind the pseudo-autonomous "rail shooter" feel of so many console games, you may like this game. If you prefer the problem-solving of a game like Deus Ex or Thief - The Dark Project, however, you'll be annoyed in short order.

Wow, it's already in abandonware? It's a great game for it's price and didn't overstay it's time

I really liked it, it's very cinematic.
