Description of Heretic II
Darkness has descended upon Parthoris again. I fear that this time there shall be no one to lift the damp veil that has blanketed my beautiful homeland. The plague struck quickly, and it was not until too many were infected that anyone took notice of the creeping death. Now, city streets are filled with the noxious green plague vapors that cause insanity and then death to any that are unfortunate enough to inhale it. Most are warped and twisted into a blood-crazed rage that drives them to assault nearly any that they encounter. My people have fared better than the Sidhe, but even those noble beings have regressed into mindless barbarism. Perhaps I will be able to find some means to cure this terrible nemesis that has befallen my homeland. If not, I fear all will be lost.
The Plot:
In Heretic II, you're Corvus, an elf-type-man. After killing the Serpent Rider in Heretic, Corvus returns from his banishment to Silverspring, your home, where he finds that a mysterious plague has swept the land of Parthoris, taking the sanity of those it does not kill. Corvus, the protagonist of the first game, is forced to flee his hometown of Silverspring after the infected attack him, but not before he is infected himself. The effects of the disease are held at bay in Corvus’ case because he holds one of the Tomes of Power, but he still must find a cure before he succumbs.
His quest leads him through the city and swamps to a jungle palace, then through a desert canyon and insect hive, followed by a dark network of mines and finally to a castle on a high mountain where he finds an ancient Seraph named Morcalavin. Morcalavin is trying to reach immortality using the seven Tomes of Power, but he uses a false tome, as Corvus has one of them. This has caused Morcalavin to go insane and create the plague.
Gameplay:
Besides being able to run, jump, swim and having a lot more other acrobatic skills, Corvus has also some special tricks up his sleeve. In critical situations he can rely on a wide range of magical equipment. The game offers you nine attack and six defensive weapons and spells all of which have their special properties. You can restore the life and magic power (mana) you spend during the game by collecting different magic items you will find on your way.
Multiplayer:
"Heretic II.iso zipped" Is the full CD Version of Heretic II. A (Bootable HERETIC_II CD install.iso) of the game with all "Mods, maps, textures, skins, models, skys, etc... provided in the download links below.
*Mods: (Siege, THF, Tmod, Grinbots, Skullhunters, and instagib, etc...). Read all the install instructions.
Checkout some of the "Heretic II Multiplayer Map photos (640x480)" in the map photo folder provided.

Some users may deal with the issue by using another browser or program for the download. Others may want to use controls provided by Microsoft Edge to keep the download.
In the case of new files, it displays:
This "FILENAME" isn't commonly downloaded. Make sure you trust FILENAME before you open it.
The interface has no options to deal with the issue by default. All icons that are displayed are standard icons that do not help. It is necessary to move with the mouse over the entry of the blocked file to get a list of actions. Even then, it is limited to a trash icon to delete it and a three-dot menu.
A click on the three-dots menu displays more options, including "keep". The file is saved to the local system's download folder when you select keep, but not immediately.
Edge displays yet another warning and an explanation for blocking the file download in the first place.
It reads:
Make sure you trust FILENAME before you open it.
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen couldn't verify if this file is safe because it isn't commonly downloaded. Make sure you trust the file you're downloading or its source before you open it.
Edge displays the file name below that and the publisher, or unknown if the publisher is not known.
The entire prompt has no "keep" option by default. There is a big Delete button and a Cancel button. Delete removes the download file, cancels stops the process, but does nothing else.
You need to activate the "show more" link to display additional options.

How to play music without the cd-rom for heretic II.
The _inmmcnf.ini, _inmm.dll, _inmmserv.exe,_inmmcnf.exe, and the _inmm.ini file go into the Heretic Ii directory.
To (patch) the game in order to get the music working you have to drag the (quake2.dll) on top of the (_inmmcnf,exe). Allow it to make changes and it will give you a patched message and create a (quake2.org) file to show it is patched.
Now we need to go INTO THE GAME MENU AND TURN ON THE MUSIC and adjust the setting the way you want it and then save your config which should be saved as (Corvus). Now you are done. Each time you want to listen to Music start the Corvus.cfg and then play the game and the Music should startup.
*Note: A little green (_inmmserv) icon should startup in your taskbar each time the Heretic II Music is playing.
*Note: The "_inmm.ini" has to show the location of each music file.

John this is just an exact copy of the Original Heretic II cd-rom which you can use (imgburn) to burn onto a blank disc. Heretic II version 1.06 requires the cd-rom in the drive to play the game unless you are using a Monitor/resolution (quake2.dll) fix just as the (win2kserverfix).
Heretic II version 1.07 does not require the Heretic II cd-rom.
John remember - Heretic II is an Old 1998 Game and has the redundant (GameSpy) server browser, etc.. which we know longer use, but was included in the game.

Note: The MDF file must be saved with an associated MDS file for the DVD or CD data to be played back correctly. The actual data on the CD/DVD is stored in the file with the.mdf extension, while the file with the.mds extension stores the disc's header and track information.

Yes, If you are using "Heretic2 Game Setup v1.07" you use the "H2Resolution" application found in the Heretic2 folder and input the screen size of your Monitor into the "H2Resolution" box. For you that would be "1366x768" and save it then the next time you start the heretic2 game it should use that size resolution.

*Note: If you are having problems with sound try removing these sound drivers listed below from the Heretic II folder the game will should default to "directX" sound only. Try Moving these sound "dll's" listed below into another folder you create named "sound dlls backup" or something and then set your sound settings to use "sound system default sound. Then save.cfg
It should stay on that setting the next time you start Heretic II with sound working just fine using "DirectSound" initializiation (Microsoft DirectX) instead those other old sound "dll's" which have a tendency to crash the game, etc...
*Note: sound drivers that you should be removed from Heretic2 directory:

How to change the Heretic II French audio to English.
The Cinematics can be found in the "Htic2-1.pak" which is in the Heretic II/base folder.

If you wish to keep the "French language game translation files" then you need to backup these three files first (menus.cfg, Gamemsg.txt, levelmsg.txt) and then copy/paste them back into "Heretic2/base" folder after applying this fix.

*Note: About H2Resolution. If your monitor/screen size is larger than "1920x1200" then in order to cover your screen you need to input half your original screen size of your Monitor into the "H2Resolution" box.
Example: My monitor is ""2560/1440" which H2Resolution will not input anything over "1920x1200" correctly. In order for it to cover my Monitor/Screen I had to input half my monitor size "1280x720" to get it to work full screen.
*Note: The "Music" folder uses "OGG Files (.ogg)" for music.
The game would crash at times, but by removing these sound drivers listed below from the Heretic II folder the game will use directX sound only. Try Moving these sound "dll's" listed below into another folder you create named "sound dlls backup" or something and then set your sound settings to use "sound system default sound. Then save.cfg
It should stay on that setting the next time you start Heretic II with sound working just fine using "DirectSound" initializiation (Microsoft DirectX) instead those other old sound "dll's" which have a tendency to crash the game.
*Note: sound drivers that you should be removed from Heretic2 directory:

A3DSnd.dll
EAXSnd.dll
*Note: The default rate is set for 25000, and the cl_maxfps 30, You might want to change that to set cl_maxfps 60, and set cl_yawspeed 300, but it is not necessary for playing the game.
*Note: Also, Normally - Player/clients need to allow Heretic II through the Windows firewall and set "Heretic II" compatibility settings to Windows XP service pack 2 /16bit and then restart computer to take effect to play so you might need to do this if you are having problems playing. (But, in this case I did not need to do that).

I have slight trouble running the game on my Win XP as I can't unpack the " Heretic II base folder update files " zip 'cuz it says that it's broken somehow. The main menu opens without any problems but the game asks me to put the CD when I have the ISO in my Daemon inserted. Daemon works with Evil Islands with no problems but for Heretic or LoTR: fellowship of the Ring it doesn't seem to work. Is it some RegEdit thing I have to do?

Yeah um I managed to get it to work. basically games like Soldier of Fortune 1 uses Quake 2's engine so all you need to do is copy heretic 2's exe (from where you installed the game) and paste it to the same location you installed the game then rename the pasted exe to mohaa then start the game

How I got it working on my system, Windows 10 (19041):
1. Download the ISO version with patches and mods
2. Mount the ISO and copypaste the "Bootable HERETIC_II CD install.iso" out of the primary ISO
3. Mount the CD ISO
4. Within the "setup" folder open the SETUP.exe and install your game in the folder of your choice
5. Once installed, copy the "Heretic II base folder update files.zip" from the primary ISO and extract it into your installation folder, replacing the "base" folder
6. From the primary ISO, navigate to "Heretic II update files" and put the "Heretic II Enhancement Pack v.1.06.exe.zip" into your installation folder
7. Extract it and run the exe
8. Navigate to the same "Heretic II update files" and extract it into your installation folder, replacing the quake2.dll in the installation folder
Brief pause: you should be able to boot Heretic 2 and load into the first level after the introduction cutscene. You will have no music in-game, but that's up next. If you get a "INSERT HERETIC 2 CD" error or simply crash after the opening cutscene, try mounting "Bootable HERETIC_II 2 CD" in drive E:.
9. Get "Heretic II soundtrack.zip" from the "Heretic II update files" folder in the primary ISO and extract it into your installation folder
10. Once extracted, go into the "Heretic II soundtrack" folder and navigate to "_inmm238-installer.zip". Install it in the location of your choice.
11. Go into your _inmm installation folder.
12. Drag and drop a copy of "quake2.dll" (the one we got out of the win2kserverfix.zip) into the _inmmcnf.exe to patch it
13. Move the patched quake2.dll and the additional ogg file into the game's installation folder, replacing the original
14. Open the _inmmcnf.exe and navigate into the _inmm.ini tab and click "Add"
15. Go into the Heretic 2 installation folder and from there to Heretic II soundtrack - Heretic II soundtrack and files - Heretic II soundtrack and select all 14 mp3 files
16. Click save and make sure to save the resulting .ini in the same folder as Heretic2.exe, you now should have music

So i have downloaded and attempted to install the game, ram the iso version through up to date daemon tools, quistart appeared, allowed me to click install aaaand nothing.
same thing with the bin located instalation.
No worries i tried Win95 compatibility, admin and no screen optimizations... same thing.
I even shut off my antivirus and nothing.
So i did the old trick of copying the base folders directly from the emulated CD... and nothing. (usually there is like registry file or something to fix it up in windows as installed game but i could not find it here so i may have barked it).
The installation only mentions 2 ways i tried and both end up after splash screen of the install shield (i presume something prevents install shield to get the date for installation or something).
Anyone can help me - a useless fool?
ps.: also tied the 1.06 patch but that shows the unpacking progress and yet no files appear, no options, path choice or anything so i guess its trying to check registry for where the Heretic is.

'Heretic II' is not working on my PC!!!
I tried, I really tried. I don't give up that easily on old games on modern Windows but this was beyond what I can do without breaking my computer. I spent almost 2 hours trying to run this thing!. if you have a Win XP it should work fine and also I heard it works fine on Win 7 mostly on 32x systems, but on Win 10 (very depending on what PC you use, cause Microsoft are making it difficult every time when they update there already broken software) it can be difficult. I tried so many options to run this on my win 10 64x, my PC simply refuses to install this game from the setup (since the main CD installer will not work on modern pc's) after I mount the ISO to image, turned off my UAC so it won't interrupt the installation and still nothing. my PC sadly cannot run this game. maybe one day this day will finally be available on GOG or Steam that can run this game properly. yes i know the game is stuck in copyright limbo no thanks to Activision.

I was trying so hard to install and play. Without CD, it will not play - fix - install win2kserverfix! Which file is that. Tried a lot, thinking it to be a bat file or a config or something like that. Ultimately after a month understood, that it is to extract the updated quake.dll and JUST put into the main folder (replace). Cool. Start the game.

I tried installing it, the autorun is working and the UAC installation prompt will pop up. Clicking on demo and selecting the bin file works. The issue is after I accept that, the installation screen itself isn't popping up. I tested this out on 2 other Windows 10 machines. The setup process is still open in the background, but nothing will show up at all no matter what I do. I realized this is an issue when trying to use 32 bit installers on 64 bit OS, as I have multiple other games that do this too.
I have a Win98 (not with me at the moment) and the game works fine there. I downloaded it from the place I mentioned earlier and it works although it's just a game rip. But now I am really curious how to get this game installed from the disc on modern systems.

Answer: After you make any visual/control setting changes "click Menu/Options/save config. The next time you start it it should stay that way.

God this game is an absolute nightmare to get working on modern systems it seems...
I'm using Windows 10 64 bit.
I have the disc and I tried installing, but no luck. I go into the setup folder, setup.exe, then I get the hourglass as if an application is opening, then the UAC access thing, but then nothing happens, it just sits there. I ctrl+shift+esc to check the processes, and there it is, the "32-bit setup" in the background just chilling. Nothing happens at all no matter how long I wait.
I have downloaded a "pre-installed" version of sorts from the Heretic II archives. Now that one works thankfully. However, I am beyond infuriated because every time I try to change the visual/control settings and quit the game, it FORCES me to revert back to what it was originally set to and removes my save files, as if I never opened the game since extracting it to my drive. It's driving me mad! I want to play this game again so badly and hopefully in the near future make a review video on it because it's such a great game. If you downloaded "Heretic II pre-installed and updated (1.78 GB)" from the "Heretic II Archieves" You need to start the game and bring down the console window (~) key and type in (set cd_nocd 1) and it should work without the cd.
Also, you could go to Archieves and grab the "CloneCD Heretic II Bootable image that will burn to CD" and burn it onto a new cd-rom disk.

Heretic II / get cd or iso, for 64 bit and 7/10 use otvdm you have to extract this program where you want and click on otvdmw look for the setup file from the cd in setup / setup.exe, download the Heretic II Enhancement Pack v1.07 from extract and replace in the game folder, inside you will find nglide to install (if you already have nglide do not install it) advice in the game to select opengl 32 for graphics and use the file H2Resolution to set the resolution of the game

One problem I that I had getting it to run, was that after following the directions, it just wouldn't open at all.
I found someone mentioning that it needed to be near C:, but I had it about 6 folders deep. As soon as I moved the folder, it worked great.

I played Heretic but not sure I played Heretic 2. Using win7 pro 64 bit, Intel i7. I only installed the non enhanced version, but ran the 3DFX driver from it and got it to work quite well. The only problem is running a saved game after you quit the game. It will run the saved game if I stay in the game.
However, if you have the "Entering" a level that it saves, will run, after I do that I then run my old saved game. I cannot get the enhanced version to run at all, it exits right away.

For just patches for Heretic II you need both of these below. One is the Enhancement packv1.06 which can be found on "FilePlanet for Heretic II game. The other patch was more of an Windows XP-Windows 10 "quake2.dll" fix for playing on other Windows versions other than Windows 95, which is what everyone used when the game first came out.
win2kserverfix.zip (The orginal fix for Heretic II) or the "H2 1440x900" fix for Heretic II under Windows XP (service pack2) settings for compability mode.
There are still "Heretic II" forums on "Facebook" that have been around for ages where you can post your questions.

Here's some detailed instructions if you're having trouble.
1. Download the main file and fix file to the desktop. Get the manual file too (good lore in there).
2. These are zip files. They might just unzip when you click on them. If they don't get a unzip program like WINRar. Unzip them to the desktop.
3. In the main file, drill down and you'll see two files, a large mdf file and a small mds file. You need to mount the small mds file. I use Daemon Tools Lite. It's a matter of opening Daemon Tools Lite, and I choose 'Quick Mount', point to the small mds file and click Open. That file is now mounted as a drive in My Computer.
4. Open My Computer and you'll see the Heretic II as a drive. Right Click = Open.
5. Go into the 'setup' folder and you'll see the SETUP (application file). Click on that and the game will install.
6. After installation and before you play the game, install the fix. This comes from the other zip file. It's a single file called quake2.dll. Extract the file and place it in the directory in which you installed the game on your C drive (or wherever). If you chose the default it will probably be
C:Program Files (x86)Heretic II
Windows will ask you if you wish to replace the existing file of the same name Yes
Game runs perfectly.

wtf....it doesnt even look like Heretic at all. Not to mention its third person and not first person. Why did they butcher the sequels to these? Even Hexen 2 was terribly made. Works perfectly on Windows 8.1 64bit.
You just need to keep in mind that you also need to apply the fix for Windows to play. You can download the fix with the instalation files.
After installing Heretic 2 unpack the folder containing the fix for playing on Windows inside the instalation directory of Heretic 2. When it asks if you want to replace the current files with the new ones press yes and you are good to go.
