How to play Tony Hawk's American Wasteland Windows
The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 10 and Windows 11, it works fine. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Guide and Notes for details
Install & play guide:
- Mount the disc image. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite
- Launch the installation (if autorun doesn't work - simply launch the installation from Setup.exe inside the disc). It is recommended to install the game not in default path, but in some other, non-system folder, like
C:/Games/Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, so you won't have troubles with NoCD or fixes - For CD variant: When the installation process will ask for CD2 - mount the disc image of CD2. Do the same when the installation process will ask for next discs
- After you installed the game - install the patch v1.01 (that step is required only for US version, other versions include that patch already)
- Then use NoCD, simply copy THAW.exe from the archive and put it into
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland/Gamedirectory, agree to replace the original file - Open the
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland/Gamedirectory directory and find THAW.exe. Right click on THAW.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows XP" and "Run as administrator" - Run the Launcher (Launcher.exe) to configure the game settings
- Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't work in compatibility mode with Windows XP - try to launch it in compatibility mode with other version of Windows (Windows 98, Windows 2000, etc.)
Optionally, we recommend you to install PARTYMOD by PARTYMANX. It is unofficial patch that adds fixes for better compatibility with modern systems, support of high screen resolution, improved controller support and OpenSpy fix for multiplayer mode. PARTYMOD is currently in active development, the author regularly releases new versions. Also, we recommend to check THAW Game Launcher, it's extended launcher that allows to configure many game's settings and restores the multiplayer mode
Notes:
- If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
- It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game. Also it is recommended to install K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
- The game works on DirectX 9, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
- The game was using SecuROM DRM protection, which may have issues on modern systems, use NoCD to "break" the DRM protection and play without the disc. If you see the error that there's not enough space on the hard drive when you copy NoCD files - re-install the game in non-system folder, like
D:/Games/Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Windows Protection may block copying of files to system folders (likeC:/Program FilesorC:/Windows). Be careful, Russian version of the game was protected with StarForce DRM! Make sure to use NoDVD before the first launch of Russian version, to avoid the accidential installation of StarForce drivers; that drivers can ruin your system, especially if you use 32-bit Windows OS! - Patch v1.01 for US version fixes the small multiplayer bug when keyboard is locking up if you send a message to offline user. That patch is not required for any other language versions, since they already include that fix
- By default the game supports only 4:3 screen ratio resolutions. But you can play the game in wide screen resolutions by using PARTYMOD or THAW Game Launcher, you can enable higher resolutions through it
- Another method is to use Widescreen Fix by ThirteenAG. To install it simply copy all files from the archive and put in
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland/Gamefolder, next to THAW.exe, then open TonyHawksAmericanWasteland.WidescreenFix.ini and changeResX =andResY =parameters to enable the screen resolution you need (for example, if you want to run the game in 1920x1080 mode, makeResX = 1920andResY = 1080). ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix is compatible with THAW Game Launcher, but not compatible with PARTYMOD - The game has controller support, it should work fine with most models of gamepads. For better input handling we recommend to use PARTYMOD, it has the improved controller support. Also, ReTHAWed mod has its own fix for controller support. If the game doesn't recognize your controller and you cannot configure it in the Launcher (Launcher.exe) - try using one of the additional tools from PCGamingWiki guide for controllers
- The game has a lot of mods, the biggest one is ReTHAWed mod that includes the levels from almost all Tony Hawk's games, working multiplayer servers with a lot of customization options, better support for controllers, and graphics improvements from Xbox 360 version. ReTHAWed mod is so big that it has its own mods, THPSGoat provides the biggest depository of mods for ReTHAWed
- To find more mods for the game, check THPSX forum, NexusMods, GameBanana and THPS-Modding
- Multiplayer of the game was working through GameSpy servers, but its servers were closed years ago. If you want to play the game in multiplayer, use OpenSpy app; or install PARTYMOD or THAW Game Launcher, they include OpenSpy fix for multiplayer game. ReTHAWed mod has its own fix for multiplayer mode, with custom servers. Also, the game had LAN multiplayer, so as alternative, you can play the multiplayer mode with LAN emulators, like Hamachi or RadminVPN
- If you have the issue when you selected "Random Soundtrack" setting but the game still plays the same order by default - use ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix or PARTYMOD
- Xbox 360 version of the game had the videos in better quality, you can download them here, to use it replace the files in

English pals, download the repack install it anywhere else that isn't your program files folder. Once that is done look into the reTHAWed mod, extract the launcher and place it into the same folder as THAW.exe in the GAME folder. Once the mod is done downloading you'll have a stable, and revamped THAW. You can edit a lot with this mod even make it feel exactly the same as it used to. The game starts, but I can't select anything in the main menu. The game freezes the controls. I applied the patch and the crack, and the controls are still locked up. I also tried to run the game directly (not launcher), but no success. My OS is Windows 11. I'm using the English version.

I'm gonna make this easy,
Boot up using your preferred software, when the funky Cyrillic writing comes up you're gonna select the option right above DirectX9, that will start the install. Click past the first window and it'll bring you to a page with one line of text and a drop box, that's your chance to switch to English, finish install/NOCD crack as normal and enjoy.
And remember to check the comments more thoroughly next time.

Funny how many people don't know how to use these files. Takes me back to buying pirate copies on the market in Eastern Europe, because it was the only option to play these games.
It all works fine! Yes, that IS Russian in the install, only the way Russian looks when you don't have a Russian PC. Lot's of I's and stuff. I know it's weird, but based on the type of questions asked, you CAN make your way through the setup. Be sure to select English during the language option! After it has installed, add the provided no cd crack to replace the original exe in the GAME folder, not the main installation folder.
After that, all that's left is configuring the controls in the launcher. Still gotta do that part myself, but everything else worked flawlessly.

The game is in English, but the installer and launcher are in Russian, making it somewhat hard to configure controls, bindings and such, but if you use the no cd patch it fixes the launcher.

UPDATE ON THE CRANE MISSION SOFTLOCK!
I don't know how I knew, but if you limit your game's frames to 30 frames per second or less, the mission will WORK and you can continue the game! For those of you with Nvidia graphics cards, you can use the Nvidia Profile Inspector to force the game to have lower frames. Good luck!

Use PowerISO to help with the install. Mount the bigger file to your disk drive and run it. Also, is anyone having trouble getting past the mission where you need to oil up the crane?

couldnt install;
I figured out how to deal with the MDS/MDF files with the help of PowerISO, but but the language in the installation window was not in english or any other language, looked like some error so I couldn't proceed.
